martinMARTIN:: Growing up in a Southern California era when Black surfers were few and often unwelcome, Vincent Hollier (1948 — 2025) didn’t just claim his place in the water–he made sure others could too. From standing up to racists on the beach or inviting the surf world to reckon with South African apartheid in a bold letter to SURFER MAGAZINE in the 1960’s, Hollier was a lifelong champion of Diversity In The Lineup. In step with his advocacy, he was a dedicated community mentor, spending countless days driving young Black surfers up and down the California coast in search of the perfect break–exposing them to a lifestyle outside of the city–and making sure they could surf when they found it. In times like today, may his legacy be more than history–may it be a call to action. To remind us that every space we reclaim and every person we uplift strengthens our communities. Whether in the water, in our communities, or in our neighborhoods, may we carry his spirit forward–and the spirit of those like him–by continuing to show up, speak out, and create opportunities for the next generations to come. Vincent was a founding member of The Black Surfing Association starting in 1965. Rest In Power Vincent Hollier. We Love You Brother.
